The Abbey Medieval Festival - 10th & 11th July

Warrior - Abbey Museum
The Abbey Medieval Festival held on Saturday 10 & Sunday 11 July brings to life the colour, pageantry, excitement and celebration of Medieval Europe. Medieval re-enactors, musicians, dancers and street performers from across Australia and overseas come together in a vibrant display of life in the Middle Ages. The week-long festival and weekend tournament highlight many aspects of medieval life from the clash of iron clad knights in mock battles to the drama and thrill of jousting knights on fiery steeds. Visitors become immersed in the atmosphere of a medieval fayre and the excitement of tournament action and events. They will see jousting, knights in single combat with sword, pole axe or mace, melees, archery, cannon fire, fencing displays, dancing, medieval plays, medieval bands, Turkish Oil wrestling or listen to talks on aspects of medieval history, the most popular being Medieval Surgery.

During the tournament weekend the air rings with a cacophony of ancient musical instruments — the hurdy gurdy, medieval bagpipes, kettle drums, fiddles and horns. There is dancing, games to play, dramas to enjoy, crafts to learn and a large medieval market for those in need of retail therapy.

In the market the visitor may purchase many items available in the Middle Ages and there are demonstrations of a variety of medieval arts and crafts such as felt making, horn carving, bow making, embroidery and pottery.

Visitors, wandering through the markets often stop to enjoy the street performers — jesters, jugglers, musicians, singers and actors.

The week-long festival begins on Saturday 3 July with a celebration of medieval fun and feasting at a huge banquet complete with medieval entertainment. This is followed on Tuesday 6 July with a special Kids Medieval Fun Day, a day of workshops and activities were children can immerse themselves in a range of medieval activities.

On Friday night, 9 July, the eve of the Tournament weekend, a knighting ceremony is held in the Abbey Church adjacent to the Abbey Museum. In this ancient ceremony, visitors experience a 600 year old ritual. Performed annually by members of re-enactment group Knights Order of Lion Rampant, this ceremony provides the first glimpse into the pageantry and colour of the Tournament weekend.

The festival is open Saturday from 9:00am -7:00pm and on Sunday from 9:00am - 4:30pm. Tickets are available at the gate or on line. Visit the festival website at www.abbeytournament.com or ph 54951652 for more information.
